Ginger's Healing Properties
Ginger's Healing Properties
Ginger has been recognized for its medicinal value since ancient times.
As early as the 4th century, Chinese herbal medicine has employed
ginger to the task of treating nausea, diarrhea, stomach ache, cholera,
toothaches, bleeding, and rheumatism.
Studies have shown ginger's efficacy in treating nausea or motion
sickness--the original mission of ginger ale. It has also been used to treat
atherosclerosis, migraines, rheumatism, high cholesterol, burns, ulcers,
depression, impotence, and liver toxicity. Chinese herbalists prescribe
ginger tea at the onset of a cold.
Ginger tea from boiled ginger root can be used as a remedy for nausea
associated with pregnancy. For professionals who use their voice often
(such as actors, singers, teachers, and call center specialists), drinking
ginger brew relieves throat irritation. When taken regularly, it can
prevent nasal and throat congestion associated with excessive use of
the larynx.
Though there are no known safety issues associated with ingesting
ginger brew, some people may be sensitive to the taste. Meanwhile,
those with gallstone maladies should consult a medical professional.
